Egypt starts production of two drugs used to treat Corona patients

Egypt has started manufacturing two drugs used to treat Covid-19 patients caused by infection with the emerging coronavirus.

Amjad Talaat, general manager of the Egyptian Eva Pharma Company, said on Thursday that the company started this week to manufacture “Aviabirver” and “Remedisfer” with a production capacity of about 1.5 million doses per month.

There is currently no vaccine for Covid-19, but Russia agreed in late May to use the active ingredient “faviravir” to treat hospital patients.

“We started manufacturing the aviravir tablets that contain the active ingredient faviravir earlier this week,” Talat added. Those tablets are for simple and medium cases. He said that the price “will be lower than international prices and suitable for the Egyptian patient.”

He continued, “Within two to three weeks, the medicine will be available, and under the order of the Supreme Medicines Authority in Egypt, and it will be the one who will decide whether to go to hospitals only or pharmacies will also be allowed to get it.”

Ramida Egyptian Medicines also announced this week that it had started manufacturing a new drug based on the active ingredient faviravir.

Remedifier has achieved some positive results in small experiments with patients, and patients in some countries receive it in exceptional or humanitarian cases.

Talaat said that IFA “started manufacturing Remedisfer drug with a production capacity of 16,000 injections per day, and about 500,000 injections per month. About 1,200 doses were donated to the medicine authority, and we started today to deliver it to some quarantine hospitals under the direction of the authority.”
